Cuestionario de Preferencias de Campos Profesionales Para Estudiantes de Psicología (CPsy)

Abstract

The Cuestionario de Preferencias de Campos Profesionales Para Estudiantes de Psicología (CPsy), also known as the Career Field Preference Questionnaire for Psychology Students, is an inventory/questionnaire designed to evaluate the career preferences of psychology students. Developed by Varela-Jaramillo et al. in 2023, this instrument specifically assesses preferences across nine distinct fields: clinical and health, organizational and labor, marketing and consumer, neuropsychology, sports, forensic and legal, education and development, basic and experimental, and social and community. The CPsy integrates the three core dimensions of vocational orientation: interests, abilities, and personality traits, all characteristic of each of the aforementioned psychological fields. The development process began with an extensive conceptual review, leading to an initial pool of 134 items. These items underwent a rigorous validity assessment by expert judges. The resulting 117-item questionnaire was then administered to a sample of psychology students enrolled in Colombian universities. Subsequent exploratory factor analysis revealed a robust nine-factor structure, ultimately retaining 94 items. The instrument’s reliability, particularly internal consistency, has also been reported, with general reliability indices for the total scale ranging from 0.913 to 0.993, and for individual factors from 0.846 to 0.973.

Purpose

The primary purpose of this questionnaire is to thoroughly assess the career preferences of psychology students across various professional fields within the discipline.

Validity

Content Validity: The initial pool of 134 items for the CPsy underwent a comprehensive content validity evaluation by expert judges. Specifically, two experts were consulted for each professional field, and an additional four experts reviewed the entire test. This evaluation utilized the Lawshe Content Validity Index (Tristan, 2008). As a result of this rigorous process, 117 items achieved a Lawshe index greater than 0.6, signifying their approval for inclusion in the questionnaire administered to the sample.

Reliability

Internal Consistency: The reliability of the CPsy was assessed through internal consistency measures. General reliability indices for the total scale demonstrated strong consistency, ranging from 0.913 to 0.993. For the individual factors, the internal consistency was also high, ranging from 0.846 to 0.973. Furthermore, correlations between the items were found to be greater than 0.4 for each factor, and the correlations between items and the total score of their respective factors were greater than 0.5, indicating a strong coherence within the scale.

Factor Analysis

Exploratory Factor Analysis: An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted, which yielded a clear and robust structure comprising nine distinct factors. These factors were well-defined, exhibiting no shared loads, with all items loading uniquely onto a single factor. This EFA resulted in a final set of 94 items that explained 58.8% of the total variance. Regarding the goodness of fit indicators, the analysis reported a TLI value of 0.870 and a CFI of 0.899, both of which are considered acceptable. Additionally, an RMSEA value of 0.049 was found, which is deemed adequate, further supporting the fit of the nine-factor model.
