Description
The concept of Adversity Quotient (AQ) was proposed by Paul Stoltz in the mid-1990s, based on the research findings of numerous prominent scientists. It measures a person’s ability to eliminate or overcome difficulties or adversities. AQ is comprised of four dimensions: 控制 (Control), 归因 (Attribution: Origin + Ownership), 延伸 (Reach), and 忍耐 (Endurance), collectively referred to as CORE. Control refers to an individual’s subjective assessment of their ability to manage adversity. Those with a weak sense of control feel powerless and believe they cannot make changes, while those with a strong sense of control believe they can proactively take steps to improve their environment. Attribution involves the perceived reasons for the adversity and the individual’s willingness to take responsibility to change the outcome, which can be internal or external. Reach assesses the perceived extent of the adversity’s impact. Generally, a higher AQ indicates a view of adversity as a specific event that one feels capable of managing, thus minimizing its negative effects. Conversely, those with a low AQ see adversity’s negative impacts as expanding, affecting various aspects of their lives, learning, and work. Endurance refers to recognizing the persistence of a problem and its prolonged effects on the individual. People with a low AQ tend to perceive the adverse impacts as lasting and difficult to dispel, while those with a high AQ have an opposite view.
