Description

The Callous-Unemotional Trait (CU) refers to a personality characteristic marked by a lack of empathy, shame, and guilt, as well as indifference to the suffering of others, manifesting as cruelty, apathy, and heartlessness (Thornton et al., 2015). Initially identified as a core dimension distinguishing psychopathic traits, CU is considered the “emotional factor” or “defect in emotional experience” of psychopathy. The emotional aspect of CU, viewed as an early sign of psychopathy, began to gain independent attention in 2004 (Frick & Morris, 2004). Characteristics typical of the CU trait include cruelty (lack of empathy and self-reproach), apathy (indifference to performance and others’ feelings), and heartlessness (lack of emotional impact). This understanding lays the theoretical groundwork for researching the emotional aspects of psychopathy in children and adolescents, distinguishing CU from other aspects of psychopathy.

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to assess the coldness and apathy aspects of the callous-unemotional traits in individuals, particularly within the context of identifying psychopathic traits in children and adolescents.

Administration Method and Scoring

The Callous-Unemotional Trait Inventory-11 (ICU-11) consists of 11 items scored on a Likert scale with four points: “1=完全不符合 (completely disagree),” “2=有点符合 (somewhat agree),” “3=符合 (agree),” “4=完全符合 (completely agree).”

Reliability and Validity

In Wang’s study, the total scale Cronbach’s α was .76, with .59 for the uncaring dimension and .69 for the callous dimension. For the three measurements conducted by Qiu Ting, the reliability scores were as follows:
– T1: 0.69 (callous), 0.76 (uncaring), 0.74 (total scale)
– T2: 0.70 (callous), 0.77 (uncaring), 0.76 (total scale)
– T3: 0.75 (callous), 0.80 (uncaring), 0.78 (total scale)

Factors and Subscales

The ICU-11 includes two factors: 冷酷 (callousness) containing 6 items and 淡漠 (uncaring) containing 5 items.
