Description
Professional Burnout, also translated as occupational burnout, psychosomatic exhaustion syndrome, job fatigue, and depletion, is defined by Maslach as a phenomenon characterized by emotional exhaustion (情绪疲惫感), depersonalization (工作冷漠感), and reduced personal accomplishment (工作成就感降低), often observed in individuals engaged in interpersonal work. Generally, the symptoms of occupational burnout manifest in three aspects: emotional exhaustion is the primary component, referring to the experience of emotional consumption in work that leads to a loss of enthusiasm, passion, and energy; depersonalization refers to an aspect of distancing and emotionally detached attitudes toward service recipients, resulting in strained interpersonal relationships; reduced personal accomplishment refers to the feeling of having low achievements in work, a negative evaluation of one’s work performance, diminished competence, and a sense of meaninglessness.

Administration Method and Scoring
The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) developed by Malsach and translated into Chinese by Yu Hua has been validated for good reliability and validity (with an overall scale homogeneity reliability of 0.823 and the three dimensions’ retest reliability ranging from 0.806 to 0.887, Cronbach’s α coefficient ranging from 0.770 to 0.888). The scale consists of three dimensions: emotional exhaustion dimension (情感衰竭维度), depersonalization dimension (去人格化维度), and personal accomplishment dimension (个人成就感维度), utilizing a Likert 7-point scale (0 to 6). Higher scores in the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization dimensions, alongside lower scores in personal accomplishment, indicate a higher degree of burnout.
Reliability and Validity
The MBI has been shown to have good internal consistency and reliability, with various statistical measures confirming its effectiveness in assessing professional burnout.
