Social Value-Need Scale

Social Value-Need Scale

CategoryDetails
DescriptionThe Social Value-Need Scale (Bolduc, 1960) was developed to measure individual differences in responses to social value-need conflicts in individuals with mental retardation. The scale was constructed using a pool of 141 items based on research criteria. The items describe conflicts between combinations of four values and five needs. Each item presents a familiar social conflict and requires a forced-choice decision between two alternate responses—one representing a value and the other a need. Initially, 141 items were created, but after expert review, 21 items were eliminated, resulting in 120 items. Further elimination due to low or negative reliability coefficients led to a final scale of 95 items. The scale was tested on institutionalized females (ages 14-18) with IQs ranging from 57 to 78. The test-retest reliability resulted in a mean reliability of .87, with a mean item reliability of .93.
