The Ritual Interaction (RI) Scale was created to study how tourists can participate in meaningful rituals. It’s based on Interaction Ritual Theory and was developed through five stages of research. The scale has 17 questions about the context, symbols, processes, and feelings involved in rituals. It was tested on tourists in China and other countries. The results showed that it’s a valid measure and that different motivations affect how tourists feel about rituals. Rituals can also influence how tourists engage and feel meaningful in their travels.
Test Format:
The items are rated on a 7-point Likert scale (from 1 = strongly disagree to 7= strongly agree).

| CE1 The building and decorations contribute to the ritual theme. |
| CE2 The color or lighting creates a ritual atmosphere. |
| CE3 The sound or music is consistent with the ritual. |
| CE4 The ritual atmosphere is appropriate (matching ritual theme, type, etc.). |
| CE5 The supporting facilities (space, seats, restrooms, etc.) for the ritual are adequate. |
| Ritual symbols (RSs) |
| RS1 This ritual is sacred for me. |
| RS2 This ritual is symbolic for me. |
| RS3 This ritual fulfills my need for authenticity. |
| Scripted Processes (SPs) |
| SP1 The ritual arrangement (presentation form, length, time, etc.) is reasonable. |
| SP2 The ritual performers are professional. |
| SP3 The ritual performers are dedicated. |
| SP4 The ritual process is attractive. |
| Shared emotions (SEs) |
| SE1 The peer interaction during the ritual is pleasurable. |
| SE2 People get along well with each other during the ritual. |
| SE3 People behave properly (civilized, orderly way, etc.) during the ritual. |
| SE4 The people at the ritual evoke my emotions. |
| SE5 The reaction of the people at the ritual emotionally infects me. |
