The Symbol Elaboration Test (SET) was developed as a projective technique to measure symbolic experiences in normal and clinical populations. It uses eleven hypothetical symbols representing basic human experiences, presented as stimulus patterns. Subjects draw and provide verbal associations to these patterns. The average time for the entire procedure is one hour.
The SET is a valuable tool for understanding individuals’ unconscious thoughts and feelings, as well as their underlying personality traits. By analyzing subjects’ drawings and verbal associations, psychologists can gain insights into their symbolic representations of various life experiences, their emotional responses to these symbols, and their underlying psychological processes.
The SET is particularly useful for exploring the unconscious dynamics of individuals who may be reluctant or unable to express themselves directly. By providing a non-verbal medium for expression, the SET allows subjects to project their inner thoughts and feelings onto the stimulus patterns, revealing aspects of their personality that may not be readily apparent in other contexts.
The SET has been used in a variety of clinical and research settings, including the assessment of personality disorders, the study of trauma, and the exploration of creative processes. It is a versatile tool that can be adapted to suit the specific needs of different populations and research questions.
Test Format:
This measure consists of 11 incomplete symbols which are to be completed by the participant. They are then asked 7 free-response questions about each symbol.
