In most utilizations, the term references the representative ingesting of the body or blood of a deity, as within the Christian Eucharist, as a way of communing more completely with the divine. That being said, it can additionally be referenced as specific rites wherein adherents try to absorb the traits of a deity by eating the body or blood of a slaughtered animal or person thought to be its representative.
