Critics point out that “constitutionally based” can encompass early environmental effects (e.g., maternal stress, nutrition) that occur before birth, rather than solely inherited genes. Furthermore, the inherent stability often claimed for temperament is sometimes questioned, with longitudinal studies suggesting that certain temperamental dimensions, particularly those involving effortful control, exhibit significant change and malleability during developmental periods.

Finally, there is ongoing discussion regarding the universal applicability of specific temperament dimensions across different cultures.
