The shift gained substantial momentum following major ethical breaches in research history, notably the post-World War II trials and the subsequent development of ethical codes like the Declaration of Helsinki and the establishment of regulatory bodies such as Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) in the United States and Research Ethics Committees (RECs) globally. - Capacity: The participant must have the mental capacity and legal ability to understand the information presented and to make a rational decision regarding their involvement. By referring to someone as a participant, the researcher acknowledges the complexity of human behavior and the limitations of purely mechanistic observation.
