Before the LSP, research on aging often proceeded separately from research on childhood; the LSP provided the necessary theoretical bridge.

Methodologically, the LSP mandated a move toward more sophisticated research designs, emphasizing the need for longitudinal studies and sequential designs that could effectively disentangle the effects of age, cohort, and time of measurement.
