While universally recognized as a syndrome, there are discussions regarding whether it should be classified as a distinct disorder in itself or, more accurately, as a severe manifestation secondary to underlying psychiatric conditions (such as mood disorders or schizophrenia) or various general medical conditions (e.g., autoimmune, infectious, or metabolic encephalopathies).
