More notably, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is frequently characterized by severe emotional dysregulation, chronic feelings of emptiness, and impulsive behaviors, including self-harm and explosive anger, which often manifest as impulsive aggression towards others. However, Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) stands out as the primary condition where recurrent, problematic impulsive aggression is the defining diagnostic criterion. Individuals with IED experience recurrent behavioral outbursts representing a failure to control aggressive impulses. These outbursts are manifested by either verbal aggression or physical aggression toward property, animals, or other individuals, occurring on average at least twice weekly for three months (without leading to damage or injury), or three behavioral outbursts involving damage or destruction of property and/or physical assault involving physical injury against animals or other individuals occurring within a 12-month period. While neurobiological models highlight genetic predispositions and brain dysfunction, critics emphasize the significant role of environmental factors, such as early childhood trauma, adverse parenting styles, social learning, and exposure to violence. What might be considered a disproportionate aggressive reaction in one cultural context may be viewed differently in another, influenced by societal norms, values, and accepted forms of conflict resolution.
