Referring back to the child and the cat example, if the child repeatedly observes that the “doggy” makes a different sound (meows instead of barks) and their parents call it a “cat,” the child will eventually accommodate by creating a new schema for “cat” or modifying their “dog” schema to be more specific.

The relationship between assimilation and accommodation is symbiotic; they work in tandem to facilitate adaptation and learning. Assimilation allows for the efficient processing of familiar information, while accommodation ensures that schemas remain flexible and capable of adapting to novel or discrepant experiences. It is through the continuous cycle of attempting to assimilate, encountering resistance, accommodating, and then assimilating new information into the revised schemas that cognitive structures become more complex, differentiated, and accurate representations of the world. This dynamic balance is at the heart of equilibration.

Some researchers argue that cognitive development is less stage-like and more continuous, with children often demonstrating abilities earlier than Piaget suggested or showing variability in their progression through stages, influenced by cultural and environmental factors. This challenges the notion that equilibration universally drives discrete, sequential stages.

Another criticism points to an alleged underestimation of children’s cognitive abilities, particularly infants and young children. Neo-Piagetian theorists and others have shown that with simplified tasks or more familiar contexts, children can demonstrate more advanced reasoning skills than Piaget’s original experiments indicated. This suggests that perhaps disequilibrium is not always as necessary or as difficult to overcome as Piaget implied, or that the mechanisms of cognitive change might be more varied than solely assimilation and accommodation.
