Empathy was manipulated by asking participants to imagine how Carol felt (high empathy) or to remain objective (low empathy). The cost of not helping was manipulated by suggesting that Carol would be in the same class as the participant and they would see her regularly (high cost of not helping, i.e., social embarrassment) or that she would be studying at home (low cost of not helping).
