The professional identifies the core emotion expressed—whether explicitly stated or implied through tone, posture, or facial expression—and verbalizes it back to the client. For example, responding to a story of job loss with, “You sound deeply frustrated and overwhelmed by the uncertainty,” helps the client process the affective component of their narrative.
