VISUAL EXTINCTION

a type of visual neglect wherein a formerly visible stimulant in one half of the visual field disappears whenever a stimulant appears at the same time within the other half of the visual field. Visual extinction takes place as an outcome of brain injury, generally to the parietooccipital cortex contralateral to the visual field wherein the extinction takes place.
