Respondent extinction, better known in psychology as extinction, is the cessation of a behavior that can be conditioned into animal or human behavior through behavioral conditioning. It involves the discontinuation of some behavior through negative consequences. For instance, an animal’s conditioned behavior (i.e. pushing a bar to receive food) can be extinguished through a discontinuation of rewards (no longer feeding), or through punishment (electric shock).
