a nucleus of the thalamus inside the brain which conveys messages to the main somatosensory region inside the anterior parietal cortex from the spinal cord. It is inclusive of the lateral and medial ventroposterior subnuclei, representing the face and body, and is recipient to incoming messages from cutaneous receptors.
