in the DSM-III, a set of illnesses or dysfunctions, consisting of amnestic disorder, organic character syndrome, dementia, delirium, and organic delusional syndrome, each marked by a trend of psychological and behavioral indicators correlated with temporary or lasting brain malfunction, but without referring to a cause. This diagnostic class has been eliminated from the DSM-IV-TR. Commonly referred to as organic cognitive syndromes.
