BROWN FAT

n. one of two types of adipose tissue, the other being that of white fat. Fat of the brown type is located around the spinal column and surrounding vital organs in the neck, chest, and trunk. Instrumental to weight control, it generates heat and supports a more intense metabolic activity. Compare white fat.
