BELLADONNA ALKALOIDS

n. substances extracted from Atropa belladonna, a shrub more commonly called the deadly nightshade. Its genus is named after Atropos, eldest among the Fates who in mythology weaves the thread of life and death. In the Middle Ages, the ancient Hindus used this plant extract as a poison. Examples of these alkaloids include atropine and scopolamine.
