author of A Mind That Found Itself (1908). This written account vividly described in detail the stages of his own mental illness and recovery. Incidentally, Beers (1876-1943) too had been hospitalized and treated for manic-depressive disorder. He went on to get well and become the founder of the movement on mental hygiene. It advocated new ways and a more enlightened approach in preventing and treating mental illness.
