BASIC RULE

n. in psychoanalysis, the fundamental rule of all which talks about spontaneity. In order to gather the most valid thoughts, feelings, and memories from a patient, the words must be spontaneous and unedited. As such, they tend to reveal one’s innermost desires only.

BASIC RULE: “Trained to be objective, a psychoanalyst elicits only the most honest responses by applying the basic rule.”
