AVOIDANT DISORDER

refers to a childhood or adolescent disorder in the DSM-lll. This disorder lasts at least 6 months between the ages of 21 months and 18 years and is characterized by persistent, excessive retreating from strangers. It interferes with peer relationships, but satisfying relationships with family members may be apparent. In DSM-IV-TR, this diagnosis has been subsumed under the social phobia umbrella. Also known as shyness disorder. See also avoidant personality disorder.

AVOIDANT DISORDER: “Although the diagnosis avoidant disorder is no longer in use, an individual who fit this category would now be diagnosed with social phobia.”
