AUDITORY FILTER

the process responsible for the frequency and selectivity of the auditory system. Filters begin auditory processing in that some of the noise in any environment is filtered out and left unattended. The term is closely related to the concept of a critical band but with greater emphasis on the shape or characteristics of the filter rather than simply its critical bandwidth. AUDITORY FILTER: “An auditory filter is a natural phenomenon that selects which sounds in the environment to ignore.”
