ANGIONEUROTIC EDEMA

a disorder characterized by recurrent bouts of non-inflammatory swelling in specific body tissues. Usually involves the skin, viscera, mucous membranes and other areas of the central nervous system. The swelling may be caused by allergies (food, insect bites, or infection) and last for many hours. Possible result is death if left untreated. Rarely, this disorder is hereditary, and may be occasioned by stress. Also known as Quincke’s Disease.
