De observatielijst “Neonatal Facial Coding System” (NFCS) is een unidimensioneel meetinstrument om pijn bij neonaten te meten. Het bevat 10 gelaatsuitdrukkingen die met pijn geassocieerd worden. Verder bevat de lijst 7 items die de alertheid en de kwaliteit van slapen beschrijven. Er bestaat een versie voor de observatie aan het bed en een tweede versie voor het scoren aan de hand van video’s. De tweede is ontwikkeld voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Op de ecmr-website is de eerste versie opgenomen.
