a long-chain of polyunsaturated fatty acid that is a component of most cell membranes. When liberated from the membrane by the enzymatic activity of phospholipase A2, this acid is transformed into a series of compounds known as eicosanoids. These then serve as precursors for prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and leukotrienes.
