The highly controlled and often repetitive nature of dichotic listening tasks in a laboratory setting may not fully capture the dynamic and multifaceted processes of attention as they unfold in naturalistic environments. Critics argue that the task might induce strategies in participants that do not reflect everyday attentional processes, or that performance could be influenced by demand characteristics, where participants unconsciously conform to perceived experimental expectations. Furthermore, factors such as cognitive fatigue, individual differences in working memory capacity, and motivational states can interact with the task demands, potentially confounding the interpretation of results.
