Two-Buttons Test

CategoryDetails
DescriptionThe Two-Buttons Test, developed by Schucman (1960), was designed to assess imitative ability and memory in individuals with mental retardation. The test consists of buttons and two transparent boxes into which the buttons are alternately dropped. The participant is required to imitate the examiner’s actions, with any gross motion toward the correct box being considered a correct response. The test includes six items, with the number of buttons presented increasing progressively. Initially, the examiner demonstrates the correct action for the participant to imitate. In the transfer condition, the demonstrations are omitted, and only the original explanatory gestures are used. The Two-Buttons Test has shown a high degree of stability and consistency, and it demonstrated both predictive and construct validity in a sample of children with severe mental retardation.
