a type of dispute resolution wherein the involved parties turn in their favored terms for an agreement to a neutral party, who must choose the total package of demands turned in by one of the involved parties instead of selectively approving some demands from one person and some from the other person. The insight that a dispute will be settled in this manner frequently urges people in conflict to meet at some consensus before arbitration, since an agreement will produce a better result.
