Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of genetic eye disorders characterized by a damage of the cells in the retina. This is manifested as a coloring which the physician sees when examining the retina. The early symptoms of this rare disease include having significant difficulties in seeing in the dark and a loss of peripheral vision. The late symptoms are vision loss and blindness. RP often starts manifesting in childhood: affected children may find it harder, as compared to their peers, to navigate in the dark, takes them longer to adjust to different brightness settings and are sensitive to bright lights. The general treatment is vision rehabilitation.
