Mammography

Mammography or mastography is the utilization of low-energy X-rays to assess the condition of human breasts regarding breast cancer or characteristic masses. It is a screening tool which is often performed on individuals with breast implants, breast reductions, suspected lumps, and breast cancer history. As women age it is recommended that they undergo a mammogram annually, especially if there is a family history of breast cancer. The procedure requires the breast to be compressed in between two parallel plastic plates to even out the thickness of breast tissue. This may feel uncomfortable but it is needed to get a clearer image. The results are often ready within 30 days.
