American psychologist. Washburn attained her doctorate at Cornell University, studying under the guidance of Edward B. Titchener. Following many years of instructing at many schools, she joined staff faculty of Vassar College, her undergraduate alma mater, and stayed there for the duration of her profession. She was an administrator, researcher, and teacher, printing a vast multitude of experimental analyses in the areas of memory, comparative psychology, feelings, interpretation, and aesthetics. Washburn is most widely recognized as the author of The Animal Mind , the first American textbook of comparative psychology.
