noun. 1. a receptor or sense organ which is turned on by temperature stimulus. 2. a portion of the CNS which oversees and manages the body’s core temperature and that of its vital organs. There are indicators for distinct thermoregulatory areas within the brainstem, hypothalamus, and spinal cord.
