PRIMARY DEVIANCE

The initial act that deviates from the rules of society, such as deliberate non-conformity by an individual, who up to that point had been compliant to society’s rules of conduct. Once their deviation is recognized within themselves, most will amend their behavior. Those who do not and continue the deviance might be labeled as deviant by others.

PRIMARY DEVIANCE: “Russell’s primary deviance was his refusal to attend church regularly with his peers.”
