PHYSICAL SYMBOL SYSTEM HYPOTHESIS

a hypothesis regarding the purpose and adequacy of capturing intelligence in computational systems. The hypothesis postulates that a necessary and sufficient condition for a physical system to show general intelligent action is that it be a physical symbol system. Necessary connotates that any physical system which shows general intellect will be a physical symbol system. Sufficient connotates that any physical symbol system can be arranged further to show general intellectual action.
