PASSIVE EUTHANASIA

the voluntary withholding of remediation which may extend the life of a person who is nearing death. It is differentiated from active euthanasia, wherein direct action is taken to end the life. Courts have ruled that doctors don’t have to attempt every potential intervention to extend life, but opinions vary on where the line should be drawn. There is also debate concerning the importance of the passive-active distinction, since both approaches result in decreasing the lifespan.
