Object permanence theory refers to the developmental stage where a child realizes that an object continues to exist, even if it can’t be seen, such as when a parent might hide a toy behind their back. A very young child may assume that it no longer exists where an older child knows that the toy is hidden. This is one the important stages of cognitive development that is referenced by Jean Piaget.
