Formants are peak frequencies made by our vocal cords when we speak. The vibration of the vocal cords and the changing shape of the vocal tract occur when speaking. This changing shape alters the resonant frequency of the vocal tract and produces pressure peaks at different frequencies. Formants are the frequencies at which these peaks occur happen.
