The excitation threshold refers to the level of neural depolarization that is necessary to generate an action potential. In simpler terms, this means the level of excitation (through neuro-chemical stimulation) that is needed for a muscle to react appropriately to a stimulus. For instance, when a person hears a loud noise the body releases an amount of adrenaline adequate for the person to have a startle reflex.
