n. in psychoanalytic theory, refers to the aspect of the mind – specifically, the preconscious – which represses (or censors) one’s inner thoughts and emotions. Although these ideas enter the consciousness (sometimes as a Freudian slip), they are best-kept in one’s unconscious as they tend to violate the standards of society and conscience. Introduced and developed as the concept of super ego by the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud (1856-1939).
