CARDIOPULMONARY BYPASS MACHINE

n. a machine which efficiently takes over the pumping and respiratory functions of the heart and lung combined. This mechanical device, however, only carries out these functions for a short period of time, especially during and after surgery of these two vital organs. Also called the heart-lung machine.
