n. the use of engineering principles as applied to biological processes. The focus is on designing, testing, and manufacturing aids and devices which take over the function of missing parts or impaired organs. This has given rise to hip replacements, pacemakers, artificial organs, and the like. See biomedical engineering- also rehabilitation engineering.
