n. a yellowish-red to yellowish-brown pigment found in bile. It is produced when old red blood cells are broken down in the liver. Normally, the human body produces and then excretes about 0.25 grams of bilirubin per day. When destruction of RBC is abnormal, it results in a yellowish skin condtion called jaundice. See hepatitis.
