BETHANECHOL

n. a cholinergic drug administered orally or subcutaneously to selectively stimulate muscarinic receptors. These, in turn, stimulate the contraction of the urinary bladder in order to expel urine and prevent further retention. This drug usually goes by the trade name, Urecholine.

BETHANECHOL: “Postoperatively, bethanecol is given to a patient so as to stimulate the emptying of the bowel and bladder.”
