ATARACTICS

n. pharmacological agents that have a calming or quieting effect, producing a state of ataraxy, or peace. The name was introduced as an alternative to the name by which this class of drug was most commonly known, tranquilizer. Also known as ataraxics.

ATARACTICS: “A person taking ataractics is aiming to achieve a state of peace, and for the drug to have a calming effect.”
