How to convert Minutes to Hours and Minutes

To convert minutes to hours and minutes, divide the number of minutes by 60 and then use the remainder as the number of minutes. For example, 90 minutes can be converted to 1 hour and 30 minutes by dividing 90 by 60, which equals 1 with a remainder of 30. The 1 represents the number of hours and the 30 represents the number of minutes.

Often you may want to convert minutes to hours and minutes in Excel.

Fortunately this is easy to do and the following step-by-step example shows how to do so.

Step 1: Enter the Data

First, let’s enter the following dataset in Excel that shows the time (in minutes) that it took for various athletes to finish some task:

Step 2: Divide Minutes by 1440

To display the minutes as hours and minutes, we must first divide each value in the minutes column by 1,440.

We’ll type the following formula into cell C2, then drag and fill the formula down to each remaining cell in column C:

=B2/1440

Step 3: Format the Cells

Next, we need to format the cells so the values are shown in terms of hours and minutes.

To do so, highlight the cells in the range C2:C11, then click the Number Format dropdown menu, then click More Number Formats:

In the new window that appears, click Custom in the Category list, then type [h]:mm in the Type window, then click OK:

Once you click OK, the cells will automatically be formatted as hours and minutes:

For example:

  • 30 minutes is equal to 0 hours and 30 minutes.
  • 35 minutes is equal to 0 hours and 35 minutes.
  • 71 minutes is equal to 1 hour and 11 minutes.

And so on.
