Scale Overview
The Silver Lining Questionnaire – SLQ was developed by Sodergren, S. C., & Hyland, M. E. (1997). It is designed to measure Benefit finding in illness. The scale is intended for use with Adults with chronic or acute illness.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 38 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 5 = Strongly agree, 4 = Agree, 3 = Not sure, 2 = Disagree, 1 = Strongly disagree.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 38 to 190. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low benefit finding: 38 – 88
- Moderate benefit finding: 89 – 139
- High benefit finding: 140 – 190
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.90+.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
